Why are so many network marketers struggling to make it big?

Network marketing is often described as a simple business. It just takes focus and a willingness to do the work – even if it’s only part time initially.

And the great news you are told is that anyone can do this business. In network marketing there are no age, education level, or previous work experience requirements to succeed. Everyday people are told they can jump right in and make it big in the network marketing industry. That’s part of the attraction.

But, if it’s so simple, then why are so many people struggling? And why are thousands and thousands of people constantly switching from one network marketing opportunity to another without ever making it big?

Well let’s start with marketing (or lack of it). When you’re in a network marketing business, or any other small business, then you need to accept that part of your job is marketing. Without some kind of marketing approach, you won’t generate a constant flow of leads that you can turn into either business partners or customers.

Be careful about blindly buying into the phrase, “just follow the proven system.” The so-called proven system too often misses the boat completely when it comes to proven small business marketing principles.

“So what is the most important marketing skill?” I’ve been asked some form of this question many times over the years. The answer may surprise you.

Marketing success is not about having a sexy marketing message or the most impressive marketing materials. With network marketing it’s not about having the best story or materials that really demonstrate how great your products and business opportunity are. Those things are important for sure, but not as important as great follow-up.

In this industry, too many people get caught chasing the ‘holy grail’ of network marketing. They go from company to company looking for the ideal product with the ideal business opportunity and compensation plan to go with it. And then they’re hoping for great marketing collateral to make getting others interested a no-brainer.

Always looking for the ‘killer way’ to tell their story is one of the main reasons so many network marketers never build their business. Think about this for a second. All your message or story can do is get you some initial attention. That’s it. But then everything you do after that is really follow-up.

What I've found in working with many small business owners is that they don't think all the way through their marketing follow-up process. Follow-up isn't a matter of simply putting a tickler in your calendar to call or send an email every four to six weeks to see if your prospect has made a decision.

Follow-up is about communicating with your prospects (and clients) in a very planned and strategic way. And the most important thing to remember in doing it is to always provide your clients and prospects with something of value when you're following up. Do that and watch your results soar!

The concept of follow-up is so simple. But, most network marketers launch into the business without so much as a thought as to the follow-up process. After all, you’re just following the proven system, right?

Here are Five Keys to keep in mind as you design an effective follow-up strategy:

Plan your follow-up with clients and prospects over the life of your marketing and sales flow. Yes, every business including your network marketing business has a flow. And you need to become aware of the flow so you can design your follow-up around it.

Use a good balance and combination of follow-up techniques. Letters, telephone calls, personal notes, as well as written articles and information of interest are all excellent ways to stay top of mind with your clients and prospects.

Be sure that each communication offers your client or prospect something of value. That might include information they can use, an incentive to act, a guarantee of results, etc. Just checking in to see whether they’ve made a decision tends to be viewed more as pestering than follow-up.

Send tip sheets and free reports of interest that continue to inform and educate. As you’re working to stay in touch, you’ll also be working to build a relationship of credibility and trust.

Set a schedule to contact your prospects or clients every four to eight weeks.

Take some time to think through and map out your follow-up strategy. Do this and I predict you'll see measurable results in just a few short months.

      Study simple internet marketing skills and use those techniques to generate your own leads for your business.
      Hassling friends and family is not an effective way to build your business. These old tactics are responsible for the majority of failure in the industry.
      Participating in forums that relate to your business helps to generate business leads. You can meet new people by providing information of value without spamming and put info about yourself in your profile page.
      Submitting articles that are not salesy on the net are also great. The better the value of content, the more people will seek more info from you.
      I built a website that is independent from the company I represent. This is also a great way to meet new people if you build the site right. One that is easily found on the major search engines.

    Who has experience with network marketing and taxes?
    I received a 1099 from my network marketing company for commissions and overrides. I also received a statement from them called Taxable Income REcap that shows how much I spent on Purchasing Products. You buy products at wholesale and sell them at retail. The difference is your income or "right now" money. This money is not easily tracked because they can't tell how much you sold at full cost, how much you sold at discounts and how much you kept for personal use or as gifts to further your business. Do I need to somehow claim this on my taxes as income or should I just claim what was noted on my 1099? There is also a box on my 1099-MISC form that is checked that says "Payer made direct sales of 00 or more of consumer products to a buyer (recipient) for resale." Does this relate to me or is this the company just saying that I bought more than 00 worth of stuff to sell as I see fit? Anyone have any experience with this on their federal taxes?

      You will need to fill out a schedule c. That is where you report the cost of goods sold, the income you made and how much product you have left. I would claim the income on my 1099 and anymore that you might have from this business. All a 1099 is what they(the co.) has pd you. They do not know what you spent or made elsewhere. You can look up instructions for a schedule c on IRS.gov. Type schedule c in the key words box.

      Hey Stan, all the answers provided are excellent places and strategies for promotion.

      Just be careful to NEVER promote your mlm itself. 99% people out there DON'T need another mlm, they need a system.

      You will need to promote the SYSTEM. That is where ALL the money is.

      MLM is a giant gold mine. How many strike it rich, finding the elusive gold nuggets? 99% of the time, nobody.

      How many make money selling tools to gold-diggers? A much, much higher percentage.

      Do yourself a favor and promote the system instead of your mlm. Sell the tools (auto-responders, keyword software, etc) to other distributors of your company, make instant commissions on them fast, don't wait for your first mlm commission. You'll wait forever.

      The money is all is promoting the system, mlm is just a secondary income stream. Plus if you use a system, signing up distributors in your company can be easier BUT USING A SYSTEM DOESN'T MEAN GUARANTEE SUCCESS, to be honest.

      But it does help. A lot.

      Promote the system in the front-end, help other fellow distributors with utmost necessary tools that will help them in their mlm business, pocket the instant commissions from selling them and sign up distributors in the back-end.

      That is the mlm formula for success that 99% of mlm distributors do not use. Be that smart one percenter.

      DO NOT PLUG YOUR MLM, PLUG THE SYSTEM. Don't be another mlm casualty.

      Network marketing: A relatively evolved mechanism of MLM involving various network structuring strategies (not just a binary or matrix model) and modular constructs for leadership development and independent business ownership.

      Franchising: This is where individual franchise owners partner with manufacturers/service providers to follow a duplicatible system to enhance product penetration in the marketplace.

      Private franchising: This combines the empowerment model of independent business owners in network marketing with the systemic cookie-cutter approach of franchising.

      Some opportunities that are real.
      Starting your own accounting for small businesses. I used to work for a radio station that would send the bookkeeping records to the home of a CPA.
      Typing and proofing.
      IF you live in a populated area, and there are enough writers, you can transcribe voice to print or correct writing. This is a difficult job to find customers. I tried it. Had very few clients.
      Newsletters.
      Some companies still outsource newsletters. Other people start their own newsletter. I looked into it and found a lot of newsletters started this way. Even Kiplinger's Newsletter.

      Here are a few scams to watch out for.
      Assemble things at home.
      You have to buy the materials (from them) and assemble them at home. You send in product and they buy the ones that meet the standards. The scam is, that only a few will every meet the standard. Just enough to keep you buying the parts and make them rich.
      Envelope Stuffing.
      The scam is that you send money to learn the way to make money stuffing envelopes is to run an ad for stuffing envelopes and ask people to send you money. The other scam is they send you a list of companies they send out mailers. All require higher volumes than a human can do or no longer hire outsiders.
      Surveys.
      If you send money, it is a scam. You just get a list. If you find them online, you maybe get a quarter for each survey.

      There is no other way to do it successfully than to start out in your warm market. Studies have shown that anyone who is over 21 years old knows over 10,000 people. Surely you have 100 you could speak to. Here's how I did mine. Instead of asking them to buy product, ask them who they know that might need your help. If its a product or service that truly helps people, they won't hesitate to share names with you.

      Your warm market is your training ground. They will forgive you if you don't know everything there is to know about your company. Once you've been trained in your warm market, you should be good enough to move on to your cold market. (There's a reason they call it 'cold' market)

      The beauty of your network marketing group (if they are any good) is in that they have a system in place for people to be successful. If you are not willing to follow the system, you need to get out. There is a saying in network marketing. "People need to be coachable. If they are not coachable one of two things happens -- they quit or they become coachable".

      Make sure you are in an organization where your upline is willing to work with you every day. If they are not, quit and find one where this happens, or start calling upline. Call to your first upline National. If they are not available, call your second upline National, as high as it takes to find someone willing to mentor you, and then plant yourself at their feet. If you cannot find anyone willing to work with you on a daily basis, start looking for another company.

      I have made it to Senior Regional Sales director with over 100 people under me within 6 months. I've done it by staying in contact with my National every day.

      I have to say YES to Blaze8 answer and would have said: the secret is that you have to OWN the network marketing company in order to profit from it.

      You should rather do AFFILIATE NETWORK MARKETING instead of dealing with network marketing, as it is straight forward and you are not married with a specific company.

      What you need to know is a lot of MARKETING know how first!

      The key for NOT BEING SCAMMED is know ledge.

      DO NOT JOIN A COMPANY. Invest in yourself first.

      What makes you money is SOLID Internet Marketing Know How.

      If you do not know how to promote offers on the Internet, you will fail.
      The way to make money online can be done in two ways:

      1.) create your own digital products and sell them and get paid for it
      2.) offer your service as web designer or marketer and get paid directly
      3.) market OTHER products from companies that pay you a commission
      this called AFFILIATE MARKETING

      for 3.) which is in my opinion the best potential you need to do a research
      on which companies you can trust, HOWEVER! - i you need the same know
      how that is needed for 1.) and 2.)

      You need to understand the marketing basics.

      NO Product sells itself. Do not fall for stupid websites that claim
      that their products sell literally "themselves". (I personally even promote
      a lottery network and people love to play lotteries, but you still need to know
      how to read people that are willing to PAY FOR LOTTERY TICKETS!).

      OK, you need to learn the following things:

      1. How people move online - what is "traffic" - how do people find websites online
      and buy there?

      2. How to create a website that sells - this is a know how you need either to sell
      your own OR other products. It is important that you understand that it is not so
      difficult to create COMPELLING websites that make people WANT TO BUY from
      you.

      3. Learn psychological strategies and sales processes.

      I CAN ONLY REPEAT:

      without this know how you will fail with all companies,
      whether they are legitimate or not.

      Do not join anything before you have solid know how.
      No magical program will make you reach, only getting yourself
      to the point to know what you need to do.

    • ANSWER:
      Simply put it's referral marketing. You become a distributor for a company. You sell the product/service and get paid for it. You also recruit others to do the same and you earn overrides from their sales. The basic concept is this. We recommend things to others every day. We just don't get paid for it. Most people will never be a great salesperson, but everyone can recommend something and make a few sales. By recruiting others you are building a team of other people who can make a few sales. Eventually you have a lot of people each doing a little bit and it adds up to a significant income.

      As for how to start most people will say just sign up and make a list of people you know then present the info to them. I disagree. The first step is to find the right company. There are lots of network marketing companies out there. Some are good, some are bad and some are really just ponzi schemes disguised as network marketing. There are lots of fly by night and me too companies out there. It is very important to choose a stable company with a real product or service that you can believe in and that gives people more value than what they pay for it. If you would not buy a product if there were no business opportunity attached to it then that is not the company for you. I've written an article on how to evaluate network marketing opportunities (general info, doesn't recommend a specific company). Email me if you want the link to it. I can also suggest several stable companies worth looking into.

      After you've found the right company and signed up you need to plug in to the system. A good network marketing company will have a simple, duplicatable system that is idiot proof. Actually sometimes idiots do better, because they just follow the simple instructions rather than thinking they are smarter than anyone else and trying to reinvent the wheel. Your sponsor or someone in your upline should be there to "hold your hand" in the beginning stages of your business and walk you through the steps of building your business and teach you that system. As you grow your business and begin to feel more comfortable with it they should still be there to support you as needed. The first thing your sponsor and the system will teach you is to contact everyone you know and share the info about your new business with them. They will teach you how exactly to go about doing that. You want to do it in a way that they don't feel that you are just calling to sell them something and just reject you without even looking at the info. You may invite them to a presentation at your home, give them a DVD or CD, send them to a website, take them to a professional lunch presentation or evening presentation at a local meeting room, etc. After you get going your sponsor will let you know which specific tools your company has available and how to use them. After that you will learn how to prospect for new customers and distributors while you are out doing the things you normally do.

    Is it because it's so cheap for the supplier? There seems to be an infection of network marketing firms lately. I suppose that they have no personel expenses, or at least they are minimal when they have contracted sole proprieters working for them. It seems to me that a company that wants a powerful marketing team would be willing to pay more for educated marketing students rather than the average joe willing to kick in for their "startup" package.       having an educated powerful marketing team does not guaranty a products success. Most Marketing firms are only targeting the large business's and corporations. and have little time for the small business owner with limited marketing funds. and a limited target market. is a small amount to pay if the marketing is successful and will not hurt the company finances if it doesn't. Quite frankly I find network marketing annoying, and intrusive and don't even look at it. People have become brainwashed into thinking network marketing is the greatest thing since the wheel, it doesn't take and eduction to sell it takes imagination.

      That statement is so often used as MLM propaganda its almost amusing. This line is used to disguise the fact that MLM plans are set up so that any real money is made by sponsoring people, which leads to a pyramid. Basically, if you are not bringing others into MLM with you, you are not making any money. This is NOT true for all other business.

      Even a lowly janitor at McDonald's doesn't have to find 5 other janitors to make a living wage. Find me an MLMer that makes enough money without having to recruit people and you have a salesperson, not an MLMer.

      The best strategies that work to be successful in MLM are recruiting a lot of people quickly and gaining enough perceived success that you can begin selling marketing materials to your downline and the entire company. Once you start selling marketing materials to people in MLM, you will make money hand over fist. Robert Kiyosaki is the master of this because its almost a rite of passage in MLM to buy his books...and what makes him so brilliant is that he never even joined any MLM company.

      Not that I know of. There might be some laws regarding registered broker-dealers or securities sales-people, but years ago my friend was in in Excell, and he was a broker-dealer, also CPA. If there was a conflict, or it was unlawful, he would not have done it. Now we are in FHTM (owner of company used to be in Excell; in fact, was highest-earner ever in any direct-marketing company).
      Primerica says they don't allow their reps to join another company where they have to recruit, as they are similar to network marketing and just recruit, recruit, recruit. It's really the only way to make money. But they cannot call themselves "financial advisors."
      That's what network marketing is all about--recruiting and building a big team. Sounds like you are doing a good job. Good luck. I recommend network marketing on here and get "flagged". Too bad. People are missing a huge opportunty.
