      Pyramid schemes usually don't work well either, internet or otherwise. Occasionally they may bring in some income, but it often involves a lot of hard work, typically of questionable ethics -- in other words, harassing a lot of people in different ways.

      If it's a business that could work well without the net, that's a start -- say, selling a certain specialty product. Think of the net as expanding your customer base. But be forewarned, there's no "easy" way to make money, even online. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

      Take your time. Promoters of fraudulent business opportunities often use high-pressure sales tactics. But, if the business opportunity is legitimate, it'll still be around when you're ready to decide.

      Product wise, I'd say the best is information. It requires no physical shipping nor inventory stocking. There's no exchange issue to worry about.

      But if you are thinking about selling tangible goods, worldwidebrands.com might have a list of suppliers that you like, but I can't guarantee these vendors are the real wholesalers because I've never tried them. They might be middlemen and if they are, you know you can't play price-cutting games. But these vendors are happy to deal with light volumes, even 1 item at a time is fine. Some will also do drop-shipping for you so the item goes to your customer directly from their warehouse instead of going through you.

      a.) Search Google for the owners of the company. Check these two websites: http://www.MLMwatchdog.com and http://www.imreportcard.com
      b.) Do the owners have Integrity? Add the word 'Scam' to your search.
      c.) Do the owners have a Corporate background or an in-the-field Network Marketing background?
      d.) Read your "Policies & Procedures" and "Terms & Conditions"; both are part of your legal Contract
      i.) Look for the word "Ongoing".
      ii) Look for policies that strike you as "Unreasonable". Like "Termination, with or without cause"
      iii.) Ask yourself "Does this contract protect me or the company?" "Is it clear which way it leans?"
      v.) Rules of Thumb:
      • The longer the contract, the greater the possibility that the policies important to you
      are being hidden in "Legalese"!

      2: Has the company passed the "early failure" Time Line? Are the company's Products timed with the beginning of a massive trend of consumer demand?
      a.) Beware of "ground floor opportunities" and start-up companies. 99% of companies don't last two years.
      b.) Avoid companies which have passed beyond their "momentum phase" and have become household names. (The realistic potential for big growth is gone)

      3: Does the company have a Remarkable product at a reasonable price?
      a. All MLM companies have a good product. But, there are others available that are just as good!
      i.) It should be competitively priced.
      b.) Warnings:
      i.) If the product would not sell without the business opportunity attached, it is ILLEGAL.
      ii.) If you can't pay with a credit card and Must pay by cash or money order, it is ILLEGAL.
      iii.) If distributors collect the money while the company stays at arm's length, it is ILLEGAL.
      iv.) If you MUST have a Retail Merchant's account, the company is SCAMMING YOU.
      v.) When you begin to justify your product to someone, You become a salesperson.

      4: Does the Compensation Plan Pay Part-Timers?
      a.) 95% of networkers are part-time people. The plan should ensure that people can make a decent income working a few hours per week.
      b.) Beware of companies that advertise how many millionaires they have created. Make sure it's not at the expense of those "at the bottom". Everyone should be able to benefit.
      c.)Take the Comp Plan Test - Ask yourself this question:
      "How many people do I need on my Team to earn a recurring income check of 0 per month?"
      There are companies out there that require as many as 500 and as few as 20. If your up-line won't or can't answer this basic question, You should Run.
      d.) If a company stresses "Recruit, Recruit, Recruit!", You should "Run, Run, Run!"

      5: Does your Mentor offer a System for Success that will work for You?
      a.) The team you join must have a system in place that will work for everyone who uses it.
      b.) There must be complete resources available; books, videos and audios explaining the system.
      c.) Personal development should have a big emphasis in the system. This is a relationship business, the more you know about yourself, the better you'll relate to your clients and customers.

    I'm sick of the same ol "If you give us your money, we"ll make you some money." Sometimes we end up giving them our money only to be disappointed. How is one supposed to trust any of them? Even when someone refers me to a site they claim is "for real", it's bogus.

      IF you continue to search in the same places, you will continue to produce the same results. I would not get involved with anything on a whim. The only way to build trust is through research and knowledge. If you are getting into something that you know nothing about, you will open up the chances of disappointment and you will likely be conned into something that does not fit.
      Opportunities that are "for real" are the ones that you create. There are many resources available for creating an online business around your interests. There are also websites like http://www.entrepreneur.com/ebusiness/index.html that have great ideas for online business.

      I have my own online business that is "for real" and is controlled by my wife and I alone.

      I've never been the victim because I guess I can just spot those things coming at me over the horizon.

      Here's something that you might not know. The fraudsters are right here on Yahoo Answers. Seriously.

      There's a whole bunch of fake job sites at the moment, and they are all related. Often, people post here to ask "is this site OK?" and then a whole bunch of people turn up and say "yes!". But it's ALWAYS the same bunch of people, and sometimes they ask the questions and then wait for their friends to turn up, it might even be just an alternate account, get some answers and then close the question. On eBay, this would be called shill bidding, on Y!A you could call it "shill Q&A" I guess.

      That isn't the end of it it, oh no. Let's say that you ask a question "is web site x for real?" and these same shills then report the question as not appropriate to try to get it removed. They don't like anyone asking honest questions to find honest answers.

      You may find that this question is deleted by Y!A, and if you do you should appeal against it. Also watch for thumbs down on useful posts from the shills.

      Yah, I sound paranoid. But if you research my Q&As, especially in Careers & Employment and then look at the other people who answer the question, then you can piece it all together yourself.

    Does any one know of an online school that is regionally accredited that is affordable (preferably no more than 0/credit) and offers bachelor degrees in either International Business or Finance?

    I teach myself Japanese. I've finished about 2yrs of study with a knowledge of 800 kanji and beginning Intermediate grammar topics. I have 60+ Japanese magazines, 30 or so Japanese novels and of course tons of textbooks/reference books. So I'm pretty set on learning the language.

    I want to know what kind of opportunites are available with a business degree in Japan. International or finance is my interest, I can't see how accounting would be useful going overseas since I would learn the american system of accounting and it's apparently different in international realms.

    Or any recommendations/information on opportunites, requirements, degrees, etc. would be especially welcome.

      I can't say much about working in Japan, however to your first question Northeastern Univerisity offers a bachelors degree in Finance and Accounting all online that is AACSB accredited. I don't know the cost but it can't be higher the the University of Phoenix and it is probably a better degree.

      Business opportunities that require a fee are always a scam. If you go in with them, they will make money off of you like you wouldn't believe.

      There are quite a few opportunities that are legitimate ways of earning online. Many of them, such as surveys and paid-to-post, paid-to-click and paid-to-read, pay very little indeed. If there is a referral scheme, the income becomes more significant but referrals are not easy to get and, in my experience, many drop by the wayside. The surest way of building a referral base is to build it up almost as a community and to make sure that you support and encourage your downlines!

      Just as in any business, you need (1) a product or service and (2) a market. The role of the business is in connecting the two and that is really what any payment is for.

      There are many products, of course, which have small or non-existent markets but there are also products for which the market is there but needs to be found.

      You can set up a website for your product quite easily but getting traffic to it requires some hard work. Using affiliate marketing (that is, paying a commission to others for helping you market the product) is very effective and is certainly one of the first things one should consider.

      Affiliate marketing and referral earnings are quite legitimate, provided that there is a product and that referrals are not simply paid out of the proceeds of joining such a scheme. That is one good reason why any scheme that asks you to 'buy into it' should be avoided!

      You can choose a product that you feel an affinity with and market it in many ways, according to your talents. A popular and fairly easy way is to write a 'blog' in which you talk about the products and provide links for visitors to access the products.       The secret to a steady stream of income is to have multiple campaigns or multiple streams. Very few stores make a fortune just selling one line!

      I've only given a very brief outline of what might be involved. There are many books which are worth reading (and many more which merely rehash information which can be found for free on the Internet).
